Gunpowder tea originated during the Tang dynasty (618-907) in Zhejiang Province, where it is still produced. However, its name is purported to have come from the way an English clerk once described its appearance centuries later.

 Due to its dense nature, gunpowder keeps exceptionally well, and can be brewed with hotter water than is typical for most green teas. This grade is made using select leaves that are able to be rolled into much tighter pellets. Pinhead Gunpowder’s fine, grainy texture makes it easy to see what that English clerk was talking about. 

 What we're doing:

  • 1 heaping teaspoon (about 3 grams) of Pinhead Gunpowder per 6-8 oz serving
  • Heat fresh water to 170º-180ºF
  • Steep 1-2 minutes
  • Multiple infusions

 What we're tasting:

  • Nutty – Sunflower seed
  • Earthy – Mellow smoke
  • Mineral - Copper
  • Sweet – Burnt sugar
